Rose Lawn contains Smith Cemetery, a state designated historical site that has been respectfully restored and made accessible to visitors. Part of this areas heritage from as early as 1857, Smith Cemetery is the final resting place of civil war veterans, Smith County settlers and early civil servants. The original grounds of Smith cemetery consisted of a one acre plot in the estate most recently of Dr. Willingham, and were expanded by the local partners to 28 acres.

Rose Lawn Memorial Park was honored Saturday, October 18th, 2008 by a ceremony commemorating the recording of Smith Cemetery as a Historical Landmark by the Texas Historical Commission. The ceremony was introduced by Ms. Mary Jane McNamara, Marker Chairman of the Smith County Historical Commission, and attended by approximately 80 persons. The posting of the colors was performed by the East Texas Korean War Veterans, Lee Roy Baty president. Dignitaries in attendance were recognized, including Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass, and Chairman of the Smith County Historical Commission Randy Gilbert. Ms. Bettye Baty gave a historical summary of the Smith Cemetery, including the life histories of several of the persons buried there. Many relatives of Smith Cemetery residents were in attendance and recognized. Final benediction was given by Dr. Thomas McCall, based on ancient Ionic blessing verse.
